Stairs: This photograph was shot at a nearby park and includes strong compositional elements. Some of these elements are line and shape, texture, depth, rule of thirds, leading lines and shadows. Technically, my point and shoot camera was set to a faster shutter speed of approximately 1/500. The ISO was set to 100 due to the extremely bright sun and the white balance set to sun. The whole picture is in clear focus and therefore, has a large depth of field. The sunlight is coming from the upper left in the picture. I was standing a bit off to the right and took my picture with a slight angle down, following the right railing of the stairs. Artistically, I feel as though old rickety stairs at a beach is an interesting subject matter. It gives a sense of time and shows the history of the area. A mood portrayed by this photograph is carefree and the way the branches wrap around the stairs can be very elegant.
Driftwood: Like the previous photograph, this picture was shot at the same beach. The compositional elements included are texture, positive and negative space, rule of thirds, depth and shape. My point and shoot was again set to a faster shutter speed of approximately 1/500. The ISO remained set to 100 due to the bright sunlight and the white balance set to sun. The whole picture is in clear focus and has a large depth of field. This picture has a clear sense of foreground, middleground, background. The sunlight is coming from the right in the picture, almost directly overhead. I crouched down on the beach and shot the driftwood straight on. In an artistic sense, this is a compelling subject and one with a story behind it. Where did the wood come from? It's abstract shape adds an extra edge to the photo and creates many shapes. A possible mood displayed by this photo is wonder and awe. Not only for the driftwood's story but what is beyond the wood in the background.
Girls and Leaves: This next picture was taken at the school in the courtyard. The compositional characteristics in this photo are motion, texture, positive and negative space, and rule of thirds. The DSLR was set to approximately 1/60 to blur the leaves falling and a tripod was used to keep the two girls in focus. The ISO was set to about 200 to let a little more light in and the white balance set to cloudy. The girls in the picture are in focus while the leaves are all blurred. The sun's angle is inconclusive in this photo. I crouched down and took the photo a little off to the right looking slightly up. The mood in this photo is jubilant as the girls enjoy playing with the leaves.
Jump With Leaves: Like the photo before it, this picture was also shot in the courtyard. Compositionally it includes motion, texture, positive and negative space, and depth. The positive and negative space is evident between the girl's limbs and a sense of foreground, middleground, background is clear. My point and shoot was again set to a fast shutter speed of approximately 1/500. The ISO was set to 200 and the white balance set to cloudy. The girl in the picture is in clear focus while the leaves were slightly blurred. I laid on the cement and shot upward to take this photo. Artistically, there is an interesting point of view and the girl appears very focused on the leaves she's tossing in the air.
Sunset: This photograph was shot in my backyard and is a very distinct photograph. Strong compositional elements in this photo are line and shape, depth, rule of thirds, leading lines and vibrant color. In a technical standpoint, my point and shoot camera was set to a basic shutter speed of about 1/500. The ISO was set to 200 because of the sun starting to rise and the white balance set to sun. The whole picture is in clear focus and therefore, has a large depth of field. Foreground, middleground and background is evident and the bright colors truly catch the viewer's eye. I shot directly into the sunlight for this photo while standing in my back doorway. The mood represented is pure serenity and calmness.
Tunnel: Similar to the sunrise, this photograph was also taken in my back yard. The compositional elements included are line and shape, texture, depth, leading lines and vibrant colors. Technically, my point and shoot camera was set to a faster shutter speed of approximately 1/500. The ISO was set to 200 and the white balance set to cloudy. The whole picture is in clear focus and therefore, has a large depth of field. There is foreground, middleground and background displayed. I was standing off to the left and took my picture straight on. Artistically, the ominous tunnel is an interesting subject matter. It represents the history of Somerset and the old age of the building. You can see where nature has taken it's grasp on the man-made structure. The mood in this photograph is haunting. The unknown history and contents of the tunnel are intriguing.
