Photo Emulation - Ingrid Endel
The portrait photographer I have chosen is Ingrid Endel. She was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia where she has 12 years of dance experience in ballet and jazz. As a self taught photographer, Endel is inspired by the possibilities of the human body. For Endel, photography is a way of self expression where she can use dance to her advantage. Rather than a commercial photographer, she is a photographer "artist"; very contemporary. The main subjects in her photographs are herself in dance poses along with friends of hers. I have chosen Ingrid Endel because of her extraordinary use of nature. My favorite aspect about her photographs, more specifically in the forests, is the mystical feel created.
Beacon
The shutter speed in Endel's photograph "Beacon" was long at probably 1 second to capture the most light in the dark night. The depth of field was shallow as the model is in focus and the background is slightly blurred. Compositional aspects of the photo include a straight on point of view and the photo is symmetrically balanced. Horizontally this photograph meets the rule of thirds and the evident focal point is Endel herself. The photo is horizontal but would be effective in the opposite direction with the light up into the dark sky. Visually, a sense of depth was created with foreground, middleground, and background. Movement in this photograph is minimal but Endel's arm leads your eye up to the light in her hand. The mood in "Beacon" is eerie and mystical; these moods are created through the expression on Endel's face as the light shines down on her and the darkness created by the opaque night.
Emulation
I mostly emulated Ingrid Endel through mood and lighting with some similarities in setting. For my recreation, I made sure to grab a candle that could give off the same glow as the original photograph and in my first emulation I attempted to recreate similar body language. In both my photographs the foreground , middleground and background are a lot smaller; while it looks like Endel's in a field, I was in front of a line of trees. Like "Beacon", I shot my photographs at night and used some artificial light from a flashlight to give off a similar glow to that of the moon. Also similar to Endel's original photo, I wore similar clothing for the emulation. Although it wasn't a dress, the shirt has a similar movement to a dress. Finally, the mood created in both photos is mystical and eerie like "Beacon". Through my facial expressions the mystical feel appears while the dark, ominous background is eerie.
