Alex MacLean
Alex Maclean: Kite Surfer
The camera angle that was used in this photograph was aerial. It appears as though it was taken on a slight angle rather than directly straight on. This photo is asymmetrical as the surfer balances out the sail that's away from him or her. This does meet the guidelines of the rule of thirds as the surfer and the kite are on or very close to the imaginary division lines. The clear focal point in this photograph is the sail due to it's bright red and white color on the bluish green waves (complementary). The photo was taken horizontally like most others of this artist. A sense of depth was created in this photo by the sail in the foreground and the waves and ocean in the background. There is a leading line that brings your eye from left to right; it is the wake left behind by the the surfer as he/she continues forward. The mood and impact this photo creates is a rush and a sense of exhilaration. This mood was created when the surfer was caught in action with rough waters around. The most successful thing about this photo is it's sense of isolation. That it's just the surfer and his sail going through a rough sea.
